Gokarna!

Gokarna is located in the state of Karnataka and just 3-4 hours away from Goa. It is the best go-to destination for those who are under no pressure to follow the itinerary. It’s more of a “chilled-out” version of Goa. Gokarna is more beautiful than Goa without much hustle-bustle making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy.

I went to Gokarna in December and I must say this place has something to offer to every traveller. From Mahabaleshwar Temple to crystal clear beaches this place has my heart.

Every year many people come here to worship Lord Shiva. Also, this place has become more popular amongst youngsters and backpackers.

Gokarna is the best place to enjoy the sun, sand and sea with tranquillity and take a sip of beer while getting lost in blissful sunset. The travellers who are tired of the crowd and noisy Goan beaches come here to find peace and fall in love with the rustic and laid back nature of this beach town.

There are a lot of things you can do in Gokarna :

1. Yana Caves :

Yana is famous for these two massive rock outcrops known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara. Many devotees visit here as there is a shiv temple inside the cave. During Mahashivratri, the celebration goes on for 10 days and thousands of people come and worship here. Yana village is considered as one of the wettest villages in the world and second cleanest village in India. While returning we were quite hungry so had a quick Maggie at the stall on the way.

2. Vibhooti falls :

This is a beautiful yet hidden waterfall in the western ghats and not yet a target of mass tourism. It's a 1.5km trek to reach the waterfall. As there are very few or no tourists around, you can take a dip in the cold freshwater. It is about half an hour away from Yana Caves.

3. Kudle Beach :

After returning from Vibhooti falls it's now time to sit back and enjoy the sunset at pristine Kudle beach. We settled in one of the beach shacks with some beer and food whilst watching the sun going down. I swear I couldn’t have felt more lively at that moment. After spending a couple of hours at the beach we returned to our homestay.

4. Beach Trek:

You might have heard this concept the first time right? But yes, we can trek on beaches too and trust it’s beautiful. We started our trek from Belekan Beach and reached Paradise beach after 30 min of the trek. The trek is not very difficult but it sure is beautiful. I was quite astonished looking at the pristine beaches and crystal clear water.

After spending some time at Paradise Beach we gain trekked to Half-moon Beach. As the name suggests the beach is in the shape of a crescent moon.

Next up was Om beach the last beach of the trek yet an amazing one. As the name suggests it is in the shape of and Hindi Religious symbol ‘Om’.

We had some crazy fun at the beach and an amazing lunch at the beach shack.

5. Mahabaleshwar Temple:

Built-in the Dravidian style architecture, it is a site of religious pilgrimage. The temple has some amazing history and hence people from all around the world come and pay homage here. Everyone must wear a ‘lungi’ inside the temple otherwise they won’t let you in.

These were the places you can visit in Gokarna.

Now next time whenever your friends make a plan of Goa suggest them a cooler version of Goa.
