Wow! India becomes the first country to get a Blue flag Certificate in a single attempt.

As we all know India is a peninsular country, meaning it has water in 3 surrounding sides. It also means we have beautiful beaches on all the 3 sides. Now as we have so many beaches around some of our beaches are awarded a Blue Flag certificate, which is a big deal for us. Now you might wonder what is Blue Flag certificate? Let's know more about it.

What is a Blue Flag certificate :

The Blue Flag certificate is an international eco-label. It is awarded by Foundation for Environment Education (FEE), Denmark. This certification is based on 33 criteria which are headed by 4 main points. These points are, (i) environmental education and information, (ii) bathing water quality, (iii) environment management and conservation and (iv) safety and security services at the beach area. This award is decided by an international jury comprising the members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

The environment ministry said India has also been honored the third prize by the jury under the "International Best Practices" for pollution control in coastal regions.

This Blue Flag Certificate can be granted to marinas, beaches or sustainable boating tourism operators that qualify the set standards by FEE on the environment. Hence, to get this type of certificate a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained.

India is the only country that has gained the Blue Flag certification in two years' time. Similarly, Japan, South Korea and UAE are the only other Asian nations that have been conferred with a couple of Blue Flag beaches in a period of about five to six years.

India is also the first country in "Asia-Pacific" region which has achieved this honour in just about 2 years' time," Shri Javadekar further stated in another tweet.
